Week 2, What I Accomplished This Week

This week I:
  • Responded to discussion board posts and commented on classmates’ blog eJournals
  • Attended a AACE.org webinar
  • Read my assigned reading
  • Designed and assembled a draft of my produsage assignment submission, a mash-up of an online song list and a hypothetical ukulele lesson service
  • Offered the draft of my produsage assignment submission to my classmates to review.

On Tuesday I participated along with some 260 other participants in a monthly web conference that was referenced in the course. The AACE.org webinar was on the topic “Social Media: Trends and Implications for Learning” and was led by George Siemens - Associate Director, Learning Technologies Centre, Univ. of Manitoba, Canada and David Cormier - Web Projects Lead, Univ. of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The webinar was informative, but as I stated in another blog entry, the information was coming at a rate similar to water coming out of a fire hydrant. There is supposed to be an audio recording of the session that will be made available. The bulk of my notes it pertained to the discussion of teens’ use of social media and juveniles’ active use of the web. At the conclusion of the webinar there was a three question survey that was taken as to whether or not the subject matter was overly theoretical. It will be interesting to see how next month’s webinar goes.

I also read all three chapters of our assigned reading. From the content I read I was able to respond intelligently to some of the discussion group posts.

I spent a number of hours preparing what was to ultimately become a draft of my produsage assignment. I contacted Vanessa to ask her thoughts, and she suggested that I could share it with the class in the spirit of Web 2.0. I thought this was a great idea. I must admit that I felt an initial resistance about the idea of sharing my work with others, but I immediately perceived the potential advantage of having others review my work and possibly offer ideas that I never would have conceived. I have since notified my classmates that I made the draft of my submission available to them and am awaiting their feedback.

On Saturday my wife and I traveled by plane and car from Baltimore to Western Tennessee to visit family so I was able to start reading chapter five of Bruns on the plane.

  1. Jack - It definitely takes some time to get used to sharing your work with others, especially in draft form and from a distance. The project is really interesting though. I wish I had a uke.
